SAM BRUERE
Being a third-generation artist connected to the Victorian Artists Society, art has always played a major role in my life. With my grandmother exhibiting in the 1970s and my dad, Julian Bruere, involved during my childhood, I grew up surrounded by galleries and creativity.

As a kid, I sketched dinosaurs and Essendon players, using art as a way to imagine and escape—though I didn’t initially see it as my path. Mostly self-taught, I later cringed at my early work. Inspired by portrait artists like Gwen Krumins and Raelene Sharp, I began to take my development more seriously.

Observational drawing classes helped me grasp fundamentals like perspective, and studying under Barbara McManus in the VAS Pastel Class was transformative. She taught me the subtle use of colour and tone while encouraging my individual approach.

I lean toward an illustrative style, building line work first and adding colour after. Starting in pastels made that easier, but moving to oils pushed me to refine colour mixing for consistency across sessions.

Recently, I’ve grown interested in narrative painting, influenced by film cinematography. I’m fascinated by how composition and detail can suggest stories and invite interpretation. It’s rewarding to hear others’ imaginative takes on my work—often richer than my own intentions.

After a decade of learning from mentors and experience, I now feel proud of my work and grateful to be part of the artistic community at the Society.
